Ok, here is my situation. For a long time I have had power heads in the display and in the rear chamber of my 24DX to provide flow and filtration to the tank. The pumps have been becoming clogged constantly and the turnover rate for the tank is very low. There is one maxi 1200 in the display and another in the third rear chamber pumping down to a chiller and then back up to the tank. The middle chamber is the refugium and the first contains a skimmer. I will be removing both of the maxijet 1200s and replacing them with an external pump. The pump that I chose for what I intend to do is a Pan World 50px-x (1100 gph). I have actually already purchased the pump and have it in hand. The new configuration will be as such:
It will be an inline system with the water traveling from the tank to the pump (3ft), from the pump to Pentair Aquatics single stage filter (rated at 500gph) containing mechanical filter media and either carbon or Phosguard (0ft). From there I will either T it off and have one tube go the chiller (0ft) (max 250gph) and the other go the tank (3ft), or have the chiller section meet up again with the other tube before it enters the tank again. The entrance to the tank will be one rotating Hydor and a Y split with two fixed nozzles (diameter ½ or ¾ inches) for a total of three separate entrances.
I have some questions about the best way of hooking this up. First, do you think that the pump is too much for the system described above (btw I have a mixed reef with some softies and some LPS, hope to have SPS soon)? Second, will I be loosing a lot of gph by going from the standard 1†inlet/outlet on the pump to a 2/3 Third, is it possible to control the flow with a ball valve if there is too much flow and will this put a lot of undue stress on the pump that might damage it?
I would appreciate any and all help on my project. Let me know if you I left any critical info out that would allow you to help better. Thanks a bunch in advance.
