So I'm about to fill my new 115g tank. Just wanted some input on the renter's insurance I signed up for.

My auto was already through AIG, so I went with them. Here's the breakdown:

A. Dwelling $0
B. Other Structures $0
C. Personal Property $45,000
D. Loss of Use $3000

E. Personal Liability $300,000
F. Medical Payments to Others $1000

So, what do you all think? Any experrience with AIG, specifically with aquariums? She said everything would be covered except the live stuff.

What is Loss of Use?

Thanks.

Most Renter and Homeowner policies do not cover live animals. In regards to you tank and equipments, they are usually covered by Named Perils or Named Causes. Named Perils are Fire, lightning, theft, and the list goes on. You need to read your policy(real boring) or speak with your insurance agent/broker. If the damage is cause by something not listed, you are not covered. Loss of use is when your apartment is not liveable due to a covered loss, like a fire and you need to live elsewhere, like a motel or hotel. The insurance company will paid for the additional living cost expenses. Examples are cost of the hotel/motel room, meals unless the motel has a kitchen, etc.

In other words... make the system as redundant as possible. Make sure everything that matters like the overflow has a back-up.

Oh yeah, that's not at issue. I pretty much just wanted to make sure that if the tank busts open for god knows what reason, and the floor gets ruined, I'm only out the deductible.

Thanks for the info all.

rustybucket, what do you mean?
