I have a 180 tank that came bottom drilled with two corner overflow boxes (kind of round) and I think it works great. each side has a drain to sump and the return from sump.

I would always use a coast to coast ghost overflow box whenever possible. You maximize the space inside the tank, provide less in the tank flow restriction and maximize the surface skimming. Either way I would use a 1” pipe as the primary full siphon drain, 1-1/4 for the emergency drains

thank you for advice. so opt for either option 1 and 3. unable to use external ghost c2c due to back space. only able to use intank overflow box. roughly what is the size for overflow box if go for option 1 or 3. thank you.

The longer the better..
The longer you make it the better the surface skimming capability..
With really small overflow boxes you can have protein slicks on the water that will not get sucked down the overflow..
That can be "addressed" with powerheads pointed at the surface to knock it down but to me that just increases evaporation and then you are using energy/flow there instead of keeping detritus in suspension/eliminating stagnant-dead spots in the rest of the tank..

I think at the very least I'd do 50% of the tank length but realize that longer is better..
