I bought a $10 frag of ugly, plain ppe type palys a few weeks ago because I saw one tiny polyp that had a small speck of color on it. The original frag is at the top of the photo (you can barely make out a quarter of a polyp including the skirt) and as you can see it's that dull gray/light blue color. I figured I'd cut that single promising polyp off the frag and blast it with my led's to see if it might color up some more. Exactly 3 weeks later and I'm up to 1 big polyp, 1 baby and 2 buds. I'd say the experiment came out well.
