Interesting growth

On another forum I read this gentleman just moved and went on a walk with his camera to see what lives nearby. While he discovered amazing insects and arachnids he did a photo shoot on fungus.

Look familiar? What do you suppose it is about nature in general that one fungus and one type of coral both have a directive in their DNA that says "You know, its a really handy idea to grow out like this pattern" ?

I believe it was Maryland, but I could be wrong because there were quite a few others contributing pictures to the post. Pretty sure it was MD though.
