This is my new Peacock, Nibbles, a 3.5 inch male I got from 6th Ave Aquarium in S.F. (theres one more, same color and size thanks Uriel) This is the 30gal hes housed in. Theres a tree leather that split after being in my tank for a few hours, its been in there for a few months now. Several ricorida mushrooms, bubble coral, GSP, some zoo's and an SPS that came in with my mushrooms. Hes been munchin a silverside for a few hours now. Ive never gotten the chance to see on e eat before. He just stands in hte open goin to town on the fish.

Congrats on the purchase PD. I really like your tank too. How big is that tube? It looks really big. How's he taking it?

BTW.. how did you confirm that he was a male?

Thank you both, it took me 3 hours to arrange the tank...im not sure i like the rock work, but Nibbles seams to enjoy it. The PVC is 4 inch diameter, so when Nibbles grows up hell still fit in there and be able to move around with comfort. Unfortuniately for me the little guy would rather burro under the leather coral...

Moosen, when he was in the critter cage, 2nd set of pics, I watched him walk up the wall. When he was up there I could see the 2 little black tubes infront of his pleopods indicating that he is a male.

Thanks for the reply PD. Man do they have an appetite huh. He looks like he had a big meal in his mouth in a few of those pictures. Mine doesn't seem to care for fish for some reason. I have a damsel that he never bothered until this morning since he ran out of hermit crabs to eat. I had about 15 hermits in there and they were gone at a rate of probably 3 a day so I need to go make another trip to the beach. He's nuts for those crabs

Your welecome! Its a whole silverside...almost as big as he is!! Its gone now...it took him a few hours but he ate the whole thing. Hes gone after a snail and 2 hermits already too!! Talk about hungry! This guy packs it away!!

Glad you got him. I almost picked one up, but with 9 mantis shrimp (2 of which are in critter keepers, awaiting new digs...), I am at my limit for now. Nibbles and the other one were both given a shot at 'Mongo', my new pet Gorilla Crab, before the store called me and asked if I wanted him for my peacock. As mentioned before, I ended up deciding that he would make a good refugium garbage man, and my peacock didn't seem to want to eat him anyways.

I wonder if Mongo is responsible for the damage done to Nibbles' antenial scale...

By the way, thanks for the info on the aquarium!! Its an intresting place, ive never seen a "self serve" aquarium before...but I found some selcon and silver sides, no one esle seams to carry it.

The aquarium guys said that the crab just sat there when he got smacked, so i doubt he did the damage. He is pretty mellow.
Dr. Roy said that many mantis show up in the trade with 'war wounds', and a coupe of mine had visible scars when I got them (That has since healed).

LOL!! What a lazy crab, youd think it would try and defend it self.

Scars, eh? I wonder what happened to Nibbles...oh well.

On a side note, i just found the molt of a dime sized xanthid crab in Nibbles' tank...hopefully it will become food! I also found a large xanthid in my 110 gallon tank, its quite large, id say its body is about an inch across, if not bigger. Hes in a rock in the front, middle of the tank...should be easy to get him out after i remove the return line, power cords for the light and the hood...wait, that sounds complicated.

Nibbles is tunneling all over the tank but he isnt using the PVC cave i made for him...he has two or 3 tunnels under the PVC that he is now using...I hope he decides to use the PVC some time soon...i need to move some rocks around to find a missing orange ricordia...hopefully it isnt being used as a door to a cave or tunnel. Im also, apparently, in the first stages of a flat worm infestation...i syphoned 6 off one of my rainbow yuma ricordia at lunch today...its nerve racking reaching into a tank that you cant see a mantis in. He popped out of a cave enterance and scared the bejesus outta me while my hand was reaching for the ric, he was about 2 inches from my hand when he appeared! yikes! Im gunna try to get some more pics and video to up load soon...

at 3.5" its pretty nerve racking imagine when its 4.5" lol monte is pretty docile though she pretty much lets me put the sand right in front of her cave and i havent had any problems with her getting defensive, i think she is happy i put her in the 40 gallon breeder, monte is going to be hungry here soon its been 3 days, she must be getting ready to molt, plus since i have had my chaeto in her tank under the 10,000K/actinic during the day and full actinic at night its nearly doubled in size! who says you need 6500K to grow plants good

Wow, i dont think I could do it...even when they are across i pull my hand out of the tanks. Twitch, my G. smithii, is lightning fast and Nibbles is to big for me to want to keep my hand in the tainks for to long. Ill bet Monte loves that tank, you just moved her into that recently, right?

So im missing 3 more ricordia...but i found one in one of the manny tunnels that now zig zag through the sand. I think he even stuffed one between two rocks. If it wasnt 10 o'clock id dig them out right now...but thats a task when youve got a very curious mantis that always takes intrest in your hands. AAAHHHH He just took another...right now...man, i gotta glue those guys down. Im thinking of removing the PVC, i dont think Nibbles will ever use it...I know its only been two days, but he looks prety cozy under it. I could eaisly make another cave like I did for Mitch when he was in this tank. hmmm, so much to do, so little time.

from what i have seen recently on here it seems like more and more peacocks would rather burrow under the LR in the tank then live in the burrow, i know that as soon as i put monte in her tank she went right over to how she had her burrow before and reconsturcted it.

also if you want a good meal for a peacock and want the best algae control get about 4-5 mexican turbo snails, they make the mantis work hard to get them out and they are quite possibly the best algae controlers in the world, i only have 3 in with monte but there is no algae left on the rocks at all.

I have heard of pistols decorating their caves with things but never mantids, im thinking of adding in somethign else because the tank does look blan, im thinking about trying to find a little aquarium "RIP" or tombstone thing and i might try to train monte to put the empty shells by it, she was pretty neat in the 12 gallon and would put all of the shells in one corner of the tank for easy clean up

Yeah, working in the peacock's tank presents problems. They are active day and night, where most of my others close up at night (Thus allowing me to reach in and move stuff, inject hot water into aiptasia,etc...). 3'5"? He's probably a little smaller than that (At least to my eyes, he looked closer to 3") , as Dr. Roy says that folks tend to pver estimate a little). Hydra is a solid 5.5"+...and THICK.
man, that sounded obscene (Just a bit). They really fill out as they grow, whereas I have an almost 4" Chiraga, whose is a lot slimmer than my O. scyllarus. Dagon, my recently passed Peacock was even bigger, and really aggressive, where Hydra is pretty mellow, except at molt time.

PS: On a side note, last night I was on my apartment bulding's back porch, where my neighbors smoke. We were chatting and drinking wine, and I heard Hydra *smack* the tank loudly. One of the girls looked around, like she was trying to see where it came from (It reverberates loudly back there). I said 'Do you know what that is?' One said 'I think it's one of the lights *popping*, maybe from a power surge....' I laughed and told her (They haven't met the mantis shrimp yet, as my room is a bit messy, and they are girls, after all...). They were suprised, but said that it made sense now, especially when it would *pop* repeatedly and rapidly sometimes (Crab feeding day, I assume).

Yeah, im thinkin im going to take the tank appart this weekend and remove the PVC and let Nibbles make his own cave. I woke up this morning to find all but 3 of my Ricordias missing...all 5 of my rainbow yumas are gone, my orange, blue and green floridas are gone. Just my pink florida and a very small green florida are left. lol

Ive got 15-20 astrea snails in there and it looks like the 12 hermit crabs have already been knocked down to two. Hes using the shells to build his cave, so im sure my water quality is going to go down hill with all the carnage Nibbles has caused to the other inverts! My baby tree leather was practilly burried in the sand as well

uriel do you usually feed live food to them or do you just suppliment their diet with crabs and snails?

Well, I definately feed them more than most would think necessary. I do weekly water changes, so the problems are minimal. but, to answer your question: About 30/70 live/thawed seafood.

Peacock: Crabs 1-2 times a week, thawed shrimp 1-2 times a week, with the occassional ghost shrimp. Usually every other day for food. My peacock has just started eating snails (After 8 months...), so he may be decimating the snails that I periodically add for cleaning.

G. platysoma, G viridis, the 2 G. chiraga and my 2 new little smashers:
snails left in tank, thawed food 2-4 times a week, but in small amounts.
platy doesn't like crabs (He will kill them and then throw them into a corner), but he loves hermits. G. chiarga get a crab once a week.

2 P cilata get thawed food 2-3 times a week, and ghost shrimp 2 times or so a week. They always act very hungry, so i doubt that I am overfeeding them.

I hope that I helped a bit with your query.

-Uriel

oo yes you did, i dont know if its strees or whatnot but monte seems to not be eating as much lately, she hasnt eaten since saturday, I'm guessing its just stress from the move, she did take a snail today smash part of it and bury till later, but im getting a little worried about her, all of my levels are fine and the only metal that my tank has ever been in contact with is titanium, she is still very active but is staying in her burrow, it must be she is getting ready to molt or something like that
