invert education

i am trying to keep certain fish that may be hazardous to inverts such as large wrasses and a harlequin tusk or sohal tang. what is the benefit of having inverts at all in a reef tank and could i get that benefit if they were housed in a refugium?

If by inverts you mean "crabs, snails and shrimp" the only real benefits (other than looking pretty) are scavenging leftover food, poop pick-up and algae control. They are all nice, but none are really necessary in a well maintained tank.
