Iodine Dip for Rapid Tissue Necrosis (RTN) problem

Hello guys, I posted this in the "New to the hobby" forum but i didnt get any inputs.

I received 2 acroporas by overnight mail and during the first night they started to loose their colors and turn pale, I believe they are victims of the famous Rapid Tissue Necrosis (RTN), I was told to use the iodine dip, my question is, how often should the Iodine dip be done? I used the Kent Marine Tech-D Coral Dip & Conditioner but it doesnt tell me how often to use it....the corals almost lost all coloration but even though most likely they will die some polys are still alive and the simbiotic crabs are still in the corals so I want to do all I can to bring them back.....any inputs on how often this dip should be done??....once every day? every other day? once per week? ect....thank you again guys!!

If RTN has advanced through most of the coral, you won't be able to bring it back, but you can save what parts are living. Try fragging the parts that still have living tissue.

Sorry for your troubles. I know just how disappointing it is to watch this happen. Good luck.

We lost a few goniopora to tissue necrosis. Gave them a reef dip with iodine. Like FishinInTheDark sid, once it starts, it is really hard to stop it.

JENnKerry,
what happened at the end? are you still treating them? how often? did they die?..thanks for the inputs

Goniopora are very prone to it. I should say it hits them harder than most corals so once a goni gets it, it's a matter of days until the coral dies.

Are you sure that is the problem? It usually melts away the corals pretty quickly. I found I had to do it twice, a few days apart, to get rid of a really bad case. The dead parts won't come back but you can save the parts that haven't been infected.

If it is RTN the iodine dip will not prevent it/stop it and your only course of action is to frag as much as you can. RTN starts at the coral base and works upward and outward, and can kill a colony overnight. You will be able to see the coral tissue peeling off of the "skeleton" easily. I have fragged any acsos that have RTN'd before and have found most frags survived.

If RTN is the result of bacterial invasion, than why would Iodine not prevent/stop it? I thought that's what antiseptic (Iodine) was for.

There is no definitive view on what causes RTN. It would be great if it were bacterial so it could be treated accordingly, otherwsie the only option is fragging as much as you can as soon as you can.
