iodine = iodide?

I read that inverts need iodine, but only see iodide for sale. Are they the same thing?

No they are not the same thing, but the inverts can use iodide to get iodine. IMO, there is really no need for it unless you're one of those people that goes years between water changes. You should also not add anything unless you have a way to test for it. An overdose of iodine would be bad.

Would an iodine test kit suffice for dosing iodide. I have a fairly large invert population and would like to keep them happy.

There is no need for iodine for your inverts unless you are one of those who never ever do water changes. iodine tests are horribly inaccurate and they will not measure all the forms of iodine/iodide/iodate. The inverts in your tank will get plenty of iodine from your salt mix. Only at extreme low levels would you encounter a problem, and that would be remedied by a simple water change.

If you want to dose iodine, iodide is the form I recommend. That said, I agree there is no established need for supplemental iodine aside from possibly certain gorgonia. All else is largely myth, IMO. Many of us dosed it for years, then stopped and saw no difference.
