I'll tell you this-- my mom insisted that I be tested for the gifted program and she was met with tons of resistence. Still yet, she bullied them into doing it and I tested well above the lower limits. I see no point in posting my exact score and please don't ask. I am merely a humble reef geek here.
In any case, I spent many years in the GP and I actually had some really positive experiences. Among them were being exposed to personal computers at a time when they were in their infancy (showing my age here)-- anyone ever hear of a TRS 80??? Also, we wrote several research papers, complete with footnotes etc. (This only became valuable when I got into college).
All that said, most of the time it was a day off. Away from the rigor of the regular classroom, we were free to screw around a LOT... and we did. We were kids. Whether or not the program is worthwhile depends on your gifted teacher and your personal desire for intellectual enrichment. The latter of the two you can use on your own. That is definitely THE MOST valuable thing I got from the program...SELF EDUCATION. The kind of thing you are expected to do in college. This is also the the thing I cherish the most and engage in to this day! Of course, you don't need the GP to do this. With the internet and all the resources we have at our disposal these days-- self-education is easier than ever. That is exactly what we all do in the CVRC! Experimenting, reading, researching, and sharing our knowlege with one another.
All THAT said, you do not need to be a genius or participate in any government school generated gifted program to exercise your brain and explore your world. All you need is motivation, determination, and application. So, whatever the numbers are, YOU determine your success in life by your choices and your hard work. One of the BEST choices you can make is to get a college education. It is at the least, an insurance policy because many more doors are open to you with a degree than without. However, you and you alone, make your choices and live your life...and you also suffer the consequences of or reap the rewards of your decisions.
