Is 4 Tunze 6060 too much?

I just purchase 4 Tunze 6060 Streams for my 125 SPS tank. Do you think this will be an over kill? What will be the best placement for the 4 pumps. Someone stated, I cannot use these pumps on a wavemaker. I currently have an Ocean Motion wavemaker that I am using with 4 powerheads.

Yes, the wavemaker will destory the pumps and any damage would not be covered by the warranty. If the tank is bare bottom and after the corals are used to it, the 4 pumps will probably be OK. You can run them on timers but they have to stay on for at least an hour between off cycles.

Hi Roger

Thanks for your reply. I have a few more questions. I am currrently using a 2" fine sand bed. With the four Streams pumps it will disturb the sand bed. Should I only use two Streams? I also read a post that with the 6060 Streams pumps, I cannot use the Tunze Singlecontroller 7091 or Multcontroller 7095? If this is so, what else can I use beside a timer to turn on and off these pumps without voiding the warranty?

The only option is a timer. 2 pumps would be less likely to cause sand bed problems then all 4. The maturity of the sand bed and pump placement will be the biggest issues.

Hi,

I had two 6060's and two SEIO 820's in a 125g mixed reef. I don't think you'll like the flow pattern - I ended up going with 6000's for that tank. I have another 125g with more SPS and I run two 6100's on a 7095 and that works well - I'm running SSB's on both tanks with no issues of sand being disturbed. I found the best placement to be in the rear corners angled up slightly using the magnets and pointing the streams towards the front center pane. With 4 6060's you could do a different arrangement but get the magnet holders the stock brackets are terrible unless you are using a trimless tank.

Hi Mike

Thanks for your reply. I just return the 6060 pumps and went with two 6000 pumps, two magnets and 7095 multcontroller. Marine Depot stated this was the best set up for my needs. At this time the 6000 pumps are on backed order till 3/31/06. Currently, all my SPS corals are located in the upper middle level of the tank. The bottom rock work is very open with clams in the sand bed up front of the tank. There are no corals in the lower level of the rock work. I love the way my fishes swims in and out of the bottom rockwork. It is more like a plateau type reef. I am going to try your suggestion on the placement of the pumps. If you have any other suggest on placement let me know, since you now know my rockwork layout.

Reef Exotics has the 6000's and magnets in stock. I just got my magnets the other day from them.

I think the corner setup should work for you - most of the flow will be at the upper levels of the tank so your clams should be fine. Just make sure to angle your streams using the magnets to where you want it.
