Is a powerhead really needed for a 10g?

I have a penguin bio-wheel 150b and a 40 gph (yes 40) off brand powerhead that came with an old 2.5 gallon nano shrimp tank.

Thats 19x turnover. Wouldn't that be sufficient turnover for a 10g? or do I really need a good powerhead?

desired flow in the tank is based upon what you have in the tank, not its size.
Turnover (water flow thru sump/filtration) is based upon tank size and what you have in the system.

SPS req more flow than Softies, Fish req little at all.
Heavy bio load = increased filtration(turnover helps in this)
Low bio load req not as much

What is in your tank? What do you plan to keep in the future?

6 turbo snails, 1 nassarius snail, 1 nerite snail, 1 cleaner shrimp, and a lemon damsel. That's really all I plan to keep.

You know my opinion.

I don't think you need a "good" powerhead. I think you can get something cheap for under $25 that would benefit your tank all around. Like I said on my other posts I don't count my return pump (520 gph) and I don't always trust the ratings. Especially after being used for a long time and working less efficiently.

On my 40g I was running two 425 gph, skimmer, and canister filter and had dead spots. Now I run an 800 gph and an mp10 at 50% which is 750 gph. Plus the canister and the skimmer. The mp10 is overkill but I like the battery backup in case of a power loss.

You've already got the damsel in a tank that's too small. I don't think cutting anymore corners is a good idea.
SW filtration is the bacteria that lives in the rocks, sometimes a filter or skimmer to help, but the penguins can be nitrate factories if they are not maintained properly. Your nem won't like that. You need to keep the water moving to bring oxygen to the fish and also to prevent food and poop settling on the sand and rotting into fertilizer for algae. You can get a 528 gph for like $10, it's money well-spent IMO.

Think 2x Hydor koralia 240's would be overkill for the livestock currently in the aquarium? I can only get one right now, but if more is better..

I think 1 is fine but 2 should work fine as well. If you find that two are too much you can use the extra to keep your salt water change water mixed. That's what I do with my extra nano koralias.
