Is a sump necessary?

I have a 75 gallon reef tank, and fiddling with my sump is what is the most time consuming and annoying. Do I really need one?

Need, no but it is to your great benefit. I mean your gonna have to put your heater, and skimmer in you display..... Kinda ugly IMO. It adds more water volume to your tank for stability and you can hide all the other components in there. Not to mention the macro-algae you can grow in there to export nutrients. The benefits way outwiegh the negatives. 2 cents

No you dont need one. I just got all the parts for one so I am diving into it.
