Is anyone cultivating this or can ID it ???

daniljmaes...

the ones depicted are complanata ... generally a western tropical atlantic variety.

I will be looking for samples in the warmer weather and if you can spare some I will be asking.

Have you ever tried or have been succesful at propagating any of this ????

I have not paul. It came up on a piece of rock at the top of my display. It was in pretty decent current. It looks so much like an anemone, i thought thats what it was until it didn't react to touch. After it had grown to about the size of a golfball, it came unattached. I found it under a rock about a week later, and attached it to a rock with super glue gel. Its been sitting in my sump with minimal flow every since, lighted with a 65k spiral fluoro 24/7. It seems to be growing nicely. It has quadrupled in size in about six months i'd say. I will get a pic of it and post if you wish.

Can you prune this like any other macro? What is the rarity of it?

My camera doesn't have the best macro capability, but this is what i have
I'm wondering since the leaves are vesicular, if you can just cut them and expect growth from the cut leaf.

I had some Scinaia complanata growing on some tonga branch rock. I used blue legged hermits to take care of some hair algae problems. They took care of the hair algae and chopped the Scinaia complanata down too.

I wouldn't say that these are a rarity, just that not many reefers cultivate macro algae ( except for nutrient export ). As I am given to understand, macro cultivation is just starting to get some press.

You could try experimenting on a nice size snippet, probably taken at junction or base of a branch and sandwich in between to small rocks ( banded or glued together ) and see if it takes.

I want to find some sources such as yourselves so I can try various methods ( and hopefully be able to supply moggyhill with something ). He or she really seems to be interested.

I've just put it under that 51k bulb on melev's thread, mixed with the original 65k. I'm sure i'll have some pieces to trade here soon. Did the lpn thing for awhile moggy. HATED it.....lol. Just saw you were an rn.

i pinched off a decent size branch of it today...it had filled with bubbles. don't know what that means, but i just pinched it and let it float in the sump. You could remove the bubbles from the branch by squeezing it like a toothpaste tube. The rest of it seems to be growing nicely.

I wouldn't squeeze it. Have heard several versions, came on rock, floating around, settled in new place and anchored itself. So it might surive floating.

Have to see. As I said, need to experiment.

Well Mog

Can I call you Mog? Maybe when it's warmer and if I can get a few samples of the scinaia and my experiments are relatively successful, I can hook you up.

Sweethart, can I call you sweethart because you are, you may call me anything you like ;) Thanks so much. I look foward to hearing from you and if you are ever in my area give a call.

I think this is what I have in my chaeto - If So I'd sure like to learn more so I can help it flourish.

the top pic looks as though it is just the head portions to hawain ogo. i have a few pounds of this stuff i bought online.
comes in green turns redish brown then to the neon red.
email me for pics if needed

hey paul,
it did for the first couple of weeks then after a few calcium doses it started to firm up.
