Is Brown Household String Reef Safe?

I believe it's just cotton right? and shouldn't be a problem in a tank?

As long as it's just cotton string, I would think it would be safe.

BUT, it will only last a matter of days before it breaks down and disintegrates.

I think regular brown twine is made of jute fibers. Like xxero said it won't last long under water. Also, as it gets wet it will slack and fray. I've had good luck with rubber bands, and zip ties for macguyvering tank stuff.

Fishing line is another option.
