Is it a whelk, yay or nay?

I spotted this guy just this morning and am unsure of what it is. I've already removed one whelk from my new tank but I'm still not entirely sure I know how to identify them from other snails. This one is a lot bigger than the previously removed whelk and I don't see any discernible eye spots like the other one had.

Yep, it's a whelk.

The reason it's sideways is how you're holding your phone when you take pictures. Turn the top of the phone to the left and then take a picture and post.

carnivorous whelks always have spotted or patterned "trunks", just like the one in your pic.

You can't go by that. It's a rule of thumb, but one of those "60% correct" rules.
