Is it alive or dead?

I think it's dead. But I can't tell. This washed up on the beach and a friend of mine got it (immediately) and put it in water. It's been in a quarantine tank for about a week and shows no signs of decomposition. I'm curious to know if it's alive or dead?
And what the heck is it. I suspect it's some type of gorgonian but I'm not sure.

I believe you have to first put the picture into an image hosting site something like photobucket.com which is free and once its uploaded you can get the link for it and post that link.

You have to post the attached image in the advanced post menu. Look for the icon that looks like a paperclip.

Looks like a macro algae to me. It could be a coral, either way as long as it has some color then it is still alive.

P.s. This was found in Hilton Head on the east coast.

She found a HUGE orange sponge fan too. The top part had gray areas. I cut it all back to what appeared to be alive and it seems to be already healing. I am hoping it makes it. Even at 1/3 it's original size it's impressive.

not exactly warm water species in Hilton head. make sure your temps are not reef-like in the upper 70s.

No, it's solid white. Looks like a ghost. Has a stick center like a sea fan would (you can see it through the flesh and where one branch is broken. The rest is firm but all white.
