How can you tell if a zoanthid is deaD?

when the tissue is gone. other then that if it still have fresh, even not open, it has a chance may not be much of a one but better then the tissue just melting away.

if it smells like dead rotten fish then it is a gonner...but likely if you can see a polyp...though it may not be inflated or open it is probably still alive..
