while at a lfs today, a person was there selling liverock to the lfs from a tank he had just taken down. i watched as the clerk weighed it, and came up with a total of 85 pounds. nice purple rock, with some life to it. he gave the person selling it $42.50. thats .50 per pound. now i know he didnt have to sell it to them, but, is it just me, or is that taking advantage. this store sells it for close to eight dollars a pound. i dont know, but didnt seem right. is it just me.

Its time like that that I would have asked the guy to come talk to me, offer him $1.00 a lb and go home with plenty of rock. And he goes home with double that cash.
He should have asked for more than .50, they wanted to just get rid of it. Gotta barter when your going to trade at a store, you can always get more credit than cash. Was the store full of rock at the time?

Keep in mind that as you said, he did not have to sell it to the LFS. He probably could've gotten $3.00/lb here, but maybe he didn't want to mess with the hassle of meeting up with everyone and having people come to his house and stuff. I would imagine that he knew prior to taking the rock to the store what he was going to get for it, at least I would've asked before bringing 85lbs of LR up to get store credit.
Lets be realistic. Just because we would have called to get a per lb price doesn't mean most would. Hell, a lot of people don't log onto the internet and find this site and use it as a resource, they do what a LFS tells them they should.

I would say its that guys falt, I work at an lfs....we dont give the amount we sell it for but we give at least 2-3 dollars a pound, unless its big bulders.....then its more like a dollar because its harder to sell.....
he probably tried craigslist and such but got no hits.....

i talked to him after he left the store. he had already agreed to the deal when i first saw him. you guys are right, he knew nothing of reef central, and was actually surprised when i told him about us. makes you wonder how many others are like him. as far as the rock goes, it looked fine to me, but i am no expert.

I remember Velko used to have a stack of seasl business cards right next to his register. Do we have anything like that in any of the LFS?

I get this every time I talk to someone at a LFS.. You would be surprised.. we are probably just a small part of this hobby, here in St. Louis. The Sad part is a lot newbies get into the hobby, and out before they ever find RC.. If I would not have found RC a couple months into this, I would have to say I would not be were I am today, if even still in the hobby at all.
I always give out RC's info and where they can find us to help. Word of mouth is everything. The Cards and Signs really don't help spread the word.. How often when you are at a store do you pickup a business card, and go look it up on the net.
Some of the LFS do not want to tell them about us because as member we get 10% off our purchase.. However, I truly believe if they knew about us, newbies would stay in the hobby longer, and possibly make more money in the long run. Dry goods is another big reason they don't want to open newbies eyes to the internet.
