Is it ok for my overflow to hold water

I got my sump setup this weekend! I had some noise from the hangon overflow, so I tried closing the ball valve below it. This caused the overflow box to fill up and the drain pipe to fill above the valve, reducing noise. Is this ok? If I get that ball valve tweaked just right, it would drain at the same rate the return pump is pumping back.
My only concern is, if I get too much return flow the tank water would rise about 2.5in above the top of the display tank. Not cool. I can't imagine the return pump doing a better job as time goes by...you'd think that it would actually reduce (getting dirty, wearing out, etc), but I wanted to check.
What do you think?

sounds like a flood waiting to happen to me. for noise reduction of the overflow look here http://www.dursostandpipes.com/ you dont have to worry about matching the flow rate of the pump as it will only flow the same amount thats being pumped into the tank. well until the max flow rate of the overflow is reached. all it would take is a little algae build up in your ball valve and your going to have a problem.

another solution is to run a peice of air line from the top of the over flow to the sump. this will take some fine tuning, but once you get it right it works. i use a durso pipe myself.

I didn't think this was a good idea. In fact I didn't leave it that way--a little paranoia never hurt anyone. I think I'll go the Durso route. I'll try to build that into my overflow box.

BTW, I love the sig line!

i have dual hang on boxes and i see the design but o am not so shure it would work i mean if air built up in it it would break the suction right but i think i might try it
