In a bigger tank you have more room for mistakes but it can be done fine in a small tank. My first saltwater tank was a 30 and I never had any major problems, so its just up to you. Another problem with going small is most people get very addicted and will spend more money going bigger.

I started just fine with a 30g. Don't rush it and get hardy fish and you will do fine.

ha ha, that is a good point, I started with a 30 then afew months later I got an 80, and now I am in the process of gettin a 125.

I started with a 125 and I am happy that I did. If you have room biger is better to a certain point. For me and my house I have found that now I understand more I wish I had even started with a 180.

Mine was a 55 gal and I made all kinds of mistakes. The first major one was the idea that I could just set it up and leave it. No matter what size you go with just be sure you have the time and the money to support it. Saltwater is kinda like bringing a child into the world. Just my 2 cents worth...........

if you want to committ to a long term budget tank, then go for about 30g. if you have any inclinations of wanting to larger within the next 3 years AT LEAST, then go big now. don't mess with a 55, go to a 75, but since your already at 75, go 90...you'll be glad you did.

If you are set on getting a small tank then buy whatever you can with the intent of going larger so you do not have to buy everything all over again. That will only contribute to that storage closet that has a net worth more than your stock portfolio.

OK the larger the tank the more it will cost and maint is cut down.
If you want to start with a smaller tank to get used to it and learn the hobby then move up you can use the smaller tank for a refug. Cost is biggest facter of tank size. But the bigger the tank the happier you would be. Mines a 75 gal and would wouold like to double that. Lots of differant coral out there. And the cool fish need bigger tanks.

I setup a 55gallon in September '06. I have everything but the rock to setup my 120gallon with custom stand. I would recomend finding a tank that you love at a LFS or here on RC. Find out what it is and if you wil be happy with that style tank, go with that tank stand.

Mine was my 125g and I've loved it since day one. But I have to say..I did try a 10g nano at my office because I thought it would be easy from being able to keep an sps 125 tank but I felt it was almost impossible and I took it down after 7 months!

Mine was a 95, was only about 4 months when I decided I should have got bigger! Not because of problems, but for more room

If you a serious about this hobby then get the biggest baddest tank you can afford and have room for.This is an empty wallet hobby but well worth it with most cost upfront.

My first saltwater tank was a 220 and less than a year later I wished I had a 300 instead. That tank was a lot more stable than my 24.
