is it worth 6000?

Actually, we treat our Koi in a similar manner to our marine fish. We use the equivalent of Prazipro, we quarantine, do water changes, etc. Our Koi reproduce and we usually have to cull the babies after three years since very few of them have the coloration to be desirable. We can sell (or give) these babies away and can easily get $75 or so for the undesirable ones. I expect our Koi to live longer than either my wife or myself. As mentioned above good ones go for four figures, really good ones go for five figures, and the show ones go for unbelievable amounts, but not here in the states.

Are your koi kept outside?

Yes. Pond is heated in winter to 37F. They have a cavern in which they hibernate.

Oh, I am planning on making a pond eventually, is there a "pond forum" like reef central where I can go to lurk around and ask stuff? Or maybe a site with general directions?

Last one Brian caught was 2004 i think, maybe 2005, so when i said "almost 10 years" it's justified being 7-8 years. There was a smaller one caught 4 months ago in Majuro that went to Japan. Brian didn't catch many since they are a solo fish, but most went to Japan.

Neat fish. Rich and I had a fun conversation about them a long time ago. Thats his favorite fish. lol
