Is my clam dead?

This morning I noticed my maxima of 1.5 years laying tipped over on the sand. It got tipped by something over night and I saw it was completely removed from its byssal threads as it was torn apart. I'm worried because I've read clams generally don't fare well after this. Question is do most clams recover or is it just downhill from here? It looks fine right now. It's completely open and responding to light. I've noticed a hermit trying to irritate it (maybe it is sensing the clam's weakness?). However, the clam either squirts it or does something that knocks the hermit over and so he leave it and goes on to cause other kinds of mischief in the reef.

throw the hermits in your sump. I like to put something under the clams for them to attach to.

I'm pretty sure the byssal organ is damaged. It's just a nice sized white lump sitting unattached to the clam. The clam looks like it reattached to the rock. Clam is about 3-4". I think I will throw the hermits in the sump.

Clams drop their foot all the time as an easy way to detach and move. Do some searching, but there are quite a few threads regarding this. I say it'll be fine. It wants to move so try it in a new place.

I agree.
Mine has done the same and it has never affected it
