Is my Cyanea ok?

I just picked up my O. cyanea yesterday. Got him and aclimated him and put him in the tank. He was all over the place, exploring, climbing the glass, eyeing the chromis. He was so curious and active. This morning, he's curled up on the sand in the corner and is not active at all. He didn't even react to me looking at him. He isn't moving like he did last night. Is this normal?

The tank has been running for 4 months cycling with a chromis. The water params are bang on.

I'm just worried that I'll go home and find him dead in the tank :(

hi there,
well sometimes an octopus can sit very still. Just looking about and relaxing. I have seen them do that.

I would be concerned about this after just one day though and my initial response would be poisoning or something???

You say your water is bang on. I know its a pain in the arse but can you share your parameters with us? SG etc....

Also, have you tested for copper and do you use RO water?

Where did you get your cyanea from?

If, when you get home, the octopus is still in the same spot, I would test all parameters and do a waterchange!

sorry to hear the bad news :(

Colin

Did a 20% water change this morning thinking that it might be a something in the water. I do use RO water. Salinity 1.024, PH 8.1, Nitrates 0, Ammonia 0, temp 80F. The cyanea was imported by our LFS at our request.

Do you think the chromis is attacking it?

I'd say the temp is the issue, 80 is high for most octo's. Could be stressed. Any chance of dropping that temp down to ~70?

O.cyanea is a tropical species. So if it is a O.cyanea a 80 degree temp should not be a issue. There are only a few species local to the trade that require cooler water temps. I would just wait it out and see what happens. One thing that comes to mind is octopuses like oxygen. They have 3 hearts. So make sure your tank has plenty of oxygen in it.
The other thing is how do you know it is a O.cyanea? I have yet to find anybody that can get O.cyanea easily. Some pics of your octo posted would help. Just beacuse some one says they can get you a certin species and is sold to you under a certin name dosen't meen that is what you actually got.You can not be sure unless you know where it comes from and can ID it your self. Dose it have false eye spots? If so what do they look like? O.cyanea grows to be a extremly large octopus. They are not a comon octopus in the trade and are rarely seen for sale even on special order. If you do have one you are very lucky and will need a very large tank.
Please understand I don't meen to be negative.. I just see this alot lol. Besides if you do have O.cyanea I will be jealous lol.:D

The water is oxygenated with a skimmer. So I'm pretty sure it has enough oxygen.

The octopus doesn't have any false eyes. And the reason why I think its a cyanea because the LFS pulled his book out and ID it as that O. cyanea and it looked exactly like the pic.

As far as I know this is probably his 5 one that he's imported in that I know of.

O.cyanea has false eye spots. They will be black with out the iridescent ring in the middle. They will also have rows of white spots running down the arms. Poset some good quality pics and Colin and I will try and ID it for you, With out knowing where it was collected from can make it tuff.

how large of a tank is it???....my LFS has them too but i only have a 55 w/ 15 refuge....just not enough....
