They are Kudas and yes that is wood.

If you "candle" the male pouch you should be able to see the mass of eggs or undeveloped fry and know.
Many times though, the male inflates the pouch to tell the female he is ready to do the dance and end up getting pregnant.
I've never seen another salt water hobbyist with wood in a salt tank.
I certainly wouldn't trust it to be there without causing problems at some point as it decays.

great tip on the candle idea. As for the wood. It's driftwood. The rate of erosion is very slow and I'm keeping an eye on PH.
