Is My torch starting to die off?

Dear All,

I just bought a torch corals last sunday and today I saw there are 2 branches that is not opening much as the other do. here is the photo. please help me check if this is something bad or need anything to help them out.

My alk : 9 dkh
My Ca: 440 ppm
No3 : 2.5 ppm
Po4: 0.16 ppm

Yes, Cant tell because pic is grainy but I think I see what looks like the brown jelly disease. Look up Brown Jelly and if it looks like it I would reach in a break of the parts that are suffering.

Gosh, I dont know what to do? will it contaminate the rest of the healthy branches? should I just cut off the said 2 branches , or anyway to treat them?

ive had branches on my torch look like that and then come back to be fine. did you drop it on those heads? is there a lot of flow on those heads?

I once bumped one of the heads on my torch while moving a piece of rock in the tank. It retracted all the way and looked bruised for about a week. If it doesn't look like brown jelly I would suggest that it is unhappy for some reason and will heal itself and come back within a couple weeks (as long as you can make sure something isn't continuing to bother it).

Add a little strontium to the water. I had some tissue recession on my torch over the summer. I played with flow, light and such. Wasn't until I got the flow right and started adding small levels of Strontium that it perked back up:

If it is The Brown Jelly, nothing with save it. Try to get a close up picture of the damaged corals. As stated above it could look like that if irritated, like fallen in sand, etc. Google Brown Jelly and compare the pics to yours, if you can positively ID it has Brown Jelly, you will need to break off the heads infected, that issue can destroy whole colonies in days. It better to get the bad parts out because it can spread to other parts of the tank.

thanks for your advises.

I wonder if the Hammer head that near or beside it is the one that causing this issue. some of my friends say probably the hammer head and the torch is fighthing.

I have avoided the direct flow, as my MP 40 is so strong that I have reduce the flow rate to half but these torch and hammer head is not in the direct flow.

I dont have any idea that I bump it , I have been very carefully when I bring it home from LFS and after I dip in the coral RX for about 5 minds. but I did using tooth brush to brush it before putting back to the DT.

Hope to have more advises from yuou guys. I am a beginner and trying to learn LPS now

I have try to take a more clearer photos so you can help me diagnose if it is not possible to cure one of the branches of my torch and if so, should I cut it off to prevent any contamination to the rest? please help!

If there is no flesh left on it it up to you if you want to remove it or not. I have a couple skeletal remains form mine still in the tank

Hi USMC,

I think there are still very few pieces of flesh left there but honestly speaking, I am scared of cutting it. if I can just let the skeleton be remain there without causing any trouble to the rest of the branches then I opted not to cut it.

By the way, there is anotehr brand beside it that seems to be not extending so much, is there a way to safe it from further getting more serious?

Laslty, I wonder if this is due to the water quality or fighting with my Hammer corals (I jsut put them away frome aach other just now) or perhaps when I use tooth brushing during my dipping them with Coral RX solution? I just wandering if this is not some kind of deseases.

It could have been from the Brushing, never never ever use a brush on LPS's corals. That is like using a steel wool brush on your arm to them. When you dip just dip and thats it.

I would see what happens, but it it also starts to turn for the worse I would just break it off and remove it. It still possible it can be from the brushing or from the Brown jelly.

Your torch seems to be wedged in the rock crevice. Try to give it more room. That branch looks like its dead already if its not spreading you could just leave it.
