Is teflon paste or compound reef-safe?

I'm using teflon paste or compound to join my threaded PVC connections. do you know if it's reef-safe?

Do you mean teflon tape?

I've never heard of telfon paste. Does it have a list of ingredients on the packaging? If so, report them here.

My opinion is, that if it is safe for household plumbing use (water supply), then it should be okay for a reef tank. Very few things would be acceptable in our water supply while not acceptable to our reef inhabitants.

I routinely use PVC primer and solvent.

I agree with Matt, but if it says what is in it besides Teflon, we can know for sure.

Copper being a notable exception, which is allowed at up to 1.3 ppm in water in the US.

That's the one I was thinking of.

I can't really think of a better example, or one that even comes close.

Here's a reply from Oatey to my inquiry:

"Oatey Great White Pipe Joint Compound is certified by NSF International for
use on drinking water lines. Hope this helps!

The only thing there that's even a consideration, IMO, is the "hydrocarbon oils". I suspect that they are nontoxic enough and not very likely to get into the water enough to be any sort of issue. So if you like it better than tape, I'd say go for it.

Teflon tape does the same thing. It lubes the threads to get a better mechanical seal. The real good thing about the joint compound is you can back up. Teflon tape won't let you do thet ;)

hey im about to use the oatey great white w/ teflon also. has there been any issue using this at all?

i wanna make sure its reef safe and that hydrocarbon oil isnt toxic to reef.
