The answer to if Nikons have this feature we are discussing?
In my own hands? How? All I want is a simple yes or no.

beerguy, please take the time to look up the word "infantile". Your not helping yourself by proving you have an intellect equal to the current US president. Maybe you can try to look up the word "puerile", too???
Well in this somewhat random sampling of people, we have 3 people (me, beerguy,surfnb7) not only saying this feature is useful, but that it is VERY important. One says it isn't important. I returned my old camera primarily to get this feature. Several people have explained why it is so useful.
Chris - I partially answered your question on the prior page when I said that the Nikon D300 has this feature. I did a quick Google, and it looks like it is not a feature of the D80 either (see the Operation section of this comparison http://www.dcviews.com/reviews/Canon-Rebel-XTi-Nikon-D80/Canon-Rebel-Xti-Nikon-D80-review.htm) This means it is highly unlikely it is on the D40 or D60. I don't think you ever stated the model you are asking about?
Oh - and go Red Wings

greenhut, thanks! I was asking about the D80, as I think I'm leaning that way unless a Canon changes my mind...I'm going into the local camera store soon, and will hold many of these similar models...

i can't even begin to explain how annoying it was with my XTi to pick up the the camera if i saw something cool outside on my deck (i.e. hot air balloon passing overhead).....only to shoot and realize i was still in Av, w/ mirror lock up on, long exposure noise reduction, spot metering etc. etc....and then by the time i got all the setting back to where they needed to be the hot air balloon was behind a tree...doh!
missing a 30second window in photography could mean not having food to put on your table! lol
Chris - as you have planned, handling the cameras is your best bet. The Canon cameras similar to the D80 are the Rebel XSi and the 40D. I think the XSi is the best deal by far of the three - for it's features and image quality. Problem for some is it's small size, associated feel, and "plasticy" build quality. I also was willing to pay more for the stored settings profiles.

In Canon lingo
X's are consumer or entry level. The 20,30,40D are one step up. They all use a 1.6x sized sensor
The 5D sits all buy itself and is a fullframe sensor. It's high-end consumer, entry level professional.
The 1D is the full professional line.
the 1DMKIII is a 1.3 crop and the 1DsMKIII is fullframe

You can't forget the giant wheel on the back which comes with the 40D. That is very very useful and the rebels (Xsi) don't have it. 3 Custom function presets are a godsend to.
