Is the Pan World Pump the quietest for a Closed Loop? SPS LPS HELP?!?!

Okay,
So I have gotten some suggestions. I need a very Quiet pump on my closed loop. Bought the QO 5000 and it sounds like an airplane!!!! This is a 40 gallon breeder with a 29 gallon sump/fuge. Will house LPS, SPS, and Clams. Main Display Fish is a Mandarin. Now, I was told a Pan World Pump is one of the quietest pumps for this. The most quiet was the Poseidon, but it would add about 8 degrees to my tank. So people, I need your help. Anyone have a Pan World Pump? How Quiet Are they? I was thinking of the one that pumps 1100 GPH. I have a Quiet One 3000 for my return which I say is probably pumping 650 GPH. I was also told Ehiem but it only pumps 900 GPH and I was told it most likely wouldn't be enough flow for SPS and LPS. Can you help?

I am sure most wont agree with me, but I would go with a danner mag drive 18 or 24. I think with the head loss the 24 will not be to much IMHO. I have NEVER had a problem with the 10 or so mag drives I have had. I burned out one 24 by running it for most of the weekend completly dry! Besides that, never had a problem, they always restart with no problem and for the most part are particularly quiet. There is NOTHING quiet about the quiet one. NOTHING!

I like mag drives for submerged use, but I have tried 2 as closed loop pumps and both leaked. It wasn't the plumbing, but the housing that leaked.
If you look at marinedepot.com, it notes that mag drive pumps are not recommended for external use. The manufacturer says it is fine, but I had my problems and have heard others say as well.
I just went through this same thing, and came down to a choice between an Eheim and a Pan World. I chose the Eheim and it is really quiet. I read many threads that said the Pan Worlds and Eheims were similar in noise.

How many intakes and returns on the closed loop? 900gph is pretty good for a 40 gallon tank. If you are going to keep LPS and SPS, you will have to be a little careful. You need to be a little more specific on the species of corals you want to have. Many LPS corals do not like high flow, so a little less is better. Some SPS dont require the huge flow most people put on it. Anyway, the eheim is an excellent pump. I dont have experience with the Pan World other than the research I did led me to it and the eheim.

Hi Everyone,
My Closed Loop is Split 3 times. One going to my 3/4in sea swirl, then another going to a loc line. The Loc-line has a Y fitting thus leading to the 3rd split. I think the Ehiem would not produce enough flow since it is split 3 times, do you? I am going to do more research on the corals I would like to keep in the future. I know most of them now. I've been on Reef Frontiers and they say I can do the Posiedon if I use fans + a computer heatsink. I am not sure what that is. So, what do you guys/gals think?

Yea, split 3 ways I think you might be right about the Eheim. If all the data I received here is correct then you should be happy with the noise level of the Pan World.
A heatsink is something that is placed on the CPU to draw heat out and disperse it. I don't think I have ever seen one on a pump before. You might have to go to the DIY for help on that.

Hey MG! Noise is pretty subjective, but in an attempt to describe my Pan World I'd say it's a little louder than a computer fan. Not bad at all! No noise from the motor-just the fan. I'd highly recommend one! :)

I had the Posiedon T4 on my 50G tank with 1 250w MH and I just used a small fan to keep it cool in the summer and in the winter the heater never had to come on much. If you really want the quietest pump you can get then you will not beat the Posiedon. I have a Pan World on my 130G tank now as a return and its quiet but not even in the same class as my Posiedon. Do not get a Mag pump if you want quiet because they are NOT, the Ehiem would be the other good choice though for quiet.

Rob, what size Pan World pump are you using? Also, what size tank? I can deal with fan noise. I'm running 3 computer fans for my tank on my freshwater system now. That's fine. Just as long as I won't be able to hear it when I try to sleep at night. Do you have it hard plumbed? Or soft plumbed? I hard plumbed my tank and I don't know how to convert it to soft plumbing and hard plumbing. =/ H20 I love the sound of the Poseidon pumps and how quiet they are. I will have 2 5in fans in my canopy, plus 1 4in fan, I will also add one to the sump, I don't know if that would help with the heat issue of the tank. If I bought 2 Ehiems, Wouldn't I have to make another hole in my glass for the CL? I don't see how that would be set up. I've tried to be a do it yourselfer, but shoot, I need a mans help! Reefi N Ale where did you pick up your Pan World?

Hi MG! I have a 50PX-X which I picked up from www.marinedepot.com . It's hard plumbed to a 37.5 gallon I had made at www.socalcreations.com . It's pretty cool, you would like it! I'd love to help you, but I'm not sure exactly what you have going on. You say you have a closed loop setup with a QO 5000? If that's the case, can you post a pic of the setup?

Rob

I took the QO off. I need to get rid of it. It was way too loud. That is what started this post. My Local Reef Store Owner just recommended the Sequence Reeflo Snapper. Do any of you have experience with those? How do I post pictures? I'd love to, but I don't know how. Thank you.

So you have the closed loop plumbed, but sealed off with valves? No pump running it right now?

I know Sequence pumps have a good reputation, but I haven't experienced one to tell you how loud(or not loud) they are.

I'm not good at posting pics either! :)

Maybe you can tell us more about how this is setup? Is this just as simple as replacing the pump?

Rob

HI,
Yes it is as simple as replacing the pump. I don't have any fish or anything in the tank right now. It's just empty. I just did a test run. The closed loop is plumbed with a T split. One goes to my 3/4in Sea Swirl then the other to loc line. The loc line has a Y fitting on it. It is then split again another 2 times. For a total of 3 splits. The tank is drilled. Does this help any?

It's looks like any of the Sequence models. on Marine Depot, would be overkill for a 40g tank(plus they look EXPENSIVE!)-but that's just me.

The connections on the Pan World looks like it has the same size and configuation as your old QO. You may just have to move the plumbing a bit.

I would consider the 50PX-X or the 100PX-X. The 100PX-X may be a bit better for you considering the plumbing you have setup.

Again, this is just my opinion! :)

I'll try to post a pic of my plumbing setup for you-maybe it'll help?!

Rob

HI,
They didn't have the Sequence pump there that he told me about. It's a different one. IT's adjustable and only uses 98 watts. I will have to find it and repost. I am at my parents now and it won't let me log in over here. I don't know why. I will let you know.

Hi,
Okay it was the Sequence Snapper he suggested. Let me know what you guys/gals think. I need help deciding. I wish I had someone here to help me you know? I'm not a very good diy. I am trying to finish my canopy and I already screwed up too many times to count. =(
