its supposed to be a tricolor acro of some sort, purchased from reefhotspot over at west LA.
almost no polyp extension
has stayed this color for almost a month now
no rtn

do you see aefws? red bugs? stn?
i'm sorry i can't get a macro, this is the best shot i can do with my current camera. thanks in advance.

Could be AEFW. Tri-color acro's seem more prone to them. Take close look of the coral out of the water, you might see them.
Good luck.

Have you looked at it when the lights are out to see if there is PE? It looks like it just browned out. How deep is your tank? May want to try moving it higher to see if it needs more light.

Kenny, whats PE?
the acro was almost directly under my halides. it just remained blah so i just moved it down to the sand in case it was infected and spreads. yes there are other acros in my tank, and they are all doing very well. this particular acro was alone, no nearby acros or montis.

I had an acro that took 7 months before it extended its polyps and started to encrust its base.

Just give it time.

Why don't you put it up a little higher with more flow. I have the same corals and it was brown for a while till i put it up high and put more flow to it. But i gave it to Loc01 already :)

i am not an expert or anything but this coral just looks stresed. From what I can tell you do not have AEFW you can tell it you did by the bite marks left and as far as I can see there are none. If its a tricolor and ist only been in your tank for a month you got to give it some time before it starts to color back up. As long as your water parameters are stable and nuitrients are low it will come back. Tricolors are realy picky when it come to tanks. I have one and it took me alsmost 4months to get it to color back up some. I would say give it some time and it will come right back.

Reef hot spot sells wild colonies, and frags of wild colonies. Great guy, but if you are buying wild colonies be prepared for the eventual brown out, loss of color, change of color, and or different growth, as the coral adjusts to the different parameters of home aquaria.

I've had wild frags sit dormant for a year before I get any color or growth, then they just explode...with growth, and if they are happy you'll get the colors that you wanted...

This is the advantage of buying aquacultured frags from other reefers... Most of the time the frags will retain the color immediately, and grow quickly. This is why prices are a premium.

How many of us have bought wild colonies... expecting this vibrant color and growth and then a few mos later... stn from the middle, then you frag it up, it changes color, starts growing, but not the color that you intended it to be?

Then you also take the chance of the pests and parasites that sometimes come along with these imported corals... such as fw and red bugs...

While if you bought something from any local reefer, you can probably put it in your tank wo qt.. ( probably )

Just my 2 cents....

But then sometimes these wild frags can blossom into something really cool! I have an old frag that I got from reef collections over a year ago... didnt grow much for a whole year, kinda purplish.. Now it is blossoming into a purple acro with plum crazy coralites.. I think I'll call it "plum crazy" :)

so-- buy from local reefers - instant gratification
buy wild - take a chance.. -- could be cool, or maybe something dull.

ah, so time will tell.
its weird cuz i have another wild acro colony thats bursting with growth, not colors yet though :)
Thanks guys, i'll give it more time and leave it be.

there is VERY MINIMUM polyp extension, like 1 mm in some of the branches, thats about it though! how do these guys remain dormant and not die? amazing..

I have a white tort that I got as a frag from another reefer, and it stayed dormant till I put it into my 225 in good flow and good light, and it started to bloom immediatly...

It could also be the conditions that it was used to are not met...

Remember that seawater has an alk of 7-8 and calc of 400+ try to keep your parameters there...

I used to run a DKH wayyy too high and some corals got used to it and some didnt.
