i had an electrician come out today to look at my set-up and to give an estimate on running a dedicated 20AMP line for tank.
the job will require:
1.40' UF wire
2.2 boxes(1 single-1 double)(on either wall of laundry room that is between tank room and garage)
4. one outlet(with 4 plugs)
5.11ft. of molding to hide wire through laundry room

* $375

is ther an alternative way to help my situation?
i am currently running 14.3 AMP on a 20AMP circuit, but it has other things on it as well. NOT ONE trip in over a year....BUT, i will be adding about 2.8 AMP more this week???

I just wired a 20 amp breaker, 25' of wire, outlet box, 1 gfci, 3 standard outlets for about $35.

and I am by no means an electrician!

run 2 x 20 amp breakers. and split the appliances between each.

The price is definatley fair for an electrician to do the work. The work itself is not that difficult and I would suggest doing it yourself. The price of the supplies is really around $35.

it was $110 for me to add a dedicated 20amp circuit for my tank.... But that's new construction when all the walls are opened up... :)

I agree that this could probably be done yourself. Unless you like me and scared of electricity. IMO, I think it could be cheaper than that.

i can handle the trim work and running the wire, but the work at the main box and the wiring of outlets and box's through laundry room walls is not my thing??

could i just run industrial strength 15AMP extension cord to an outlet on a nother circuit, like say my return pump and Seio's??(hiding cord along the way)

Go to Home Depot/Lowes/Menards and get one of those DIY'er books and wire it yourself. They give you great instructions. Its not as hard as you may think. I just picked up supplies to run a 20amp line and cost for the 12-2 wire, GFCI, outlets, etc, etc was roughtly $50.00.

if you can afford to turn off your main breaker box...wire away. else you need to know a tiny bit about electrical wiring and such....but its really not hard or scary. just dont touch the wrong wire!!! ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZAAAAAAAAAAPPPPPPPPPP:eek1:

as far as the extension cord goes....i suppose that might work, but I would feel safer if it were hard wired.

not trying to talk you into doing it yourself if you dont feel comfortable...but it could save you tons$$$. I am sure a person in your local club knows how...

what are the possible drawbacks of running a extension cord off of a surge protector strip to an out let on another circuit??

A pi**ed off wife, due to a cable run from the kitchen into the family room :D.
I did that for a year before getting another line run.
Life is good :)
Cost me $100 from a local electrician BTW.

highlander :lolspin:
i'm moving in abvout 5 months, so i think i'll use the quick fix extension for now, as my new home will be wired properly.

tito - i will check that out as i am not scared to try, just don't want to mess up. But $50 is a very good number:)

me and my dad ran a seperate circut box for my 160g and 55g so that if something caused them to trip we would know that it was from one of the two tanks. very usfull and really isnt that hard if you have the supplies available. if i remember correctly it took about 3 hrs to do both tanks and install plugs under each as well. i think it should run you 50$ at the most. saves you a heck of a lot of money and you lean in the process. i mean look at it this way...im only 17 and i figured out a lot of the stuff without my dad. i also learned how to do it and do it right but that was from reading and now i have two tanks on there own circut brekers. good luck.
