Is this a hydroid?

Hello,

Can't get a pic but I have a description. It is a thin thread like looking creature with a small ball on the end. They come out at night and wave around, I saw one catch a pod and reel him in. Some are 1/2" others are a bit bigger at 1-1/2". They look like they have little small bumps all along the thread too and are a whitish gray color.

What are they and are they a danger?

Hydroid digitate, they sting like a mo-fo.
I got them out of my tank via tweezers.

Interesting....my wife thought she would be getting her good tweezers back after the bryopsis was under control.
