Is this acan the same as this one? (pics)

I recently bought this acan but the colors look so different. My lighting is 70W MH, his is Tek t-5 4 bulbs at 39watts each. But also the patterns around the centers are different. I just want to make sure I got the acan I bought.
Here is the one showed to me, the one I bought:

Here is the one I received:

Thank you.

it looks to me that the first one has cuts on two sides. And the one you ahve is round all the way around. Is that correct? It is hard to tell from that angle.
And is there that inner whitish center on the second picture all the time? Or is that just the feeding tenticals emerging?

I just checked again and the white rings have gone away a little but there still there. I just don't understand why the white parts are all white and not even a little blue. Even with the different lighting I should still see some kind of blue right? The other corals I got matched up perfectly color wise..

hmmm maybe show a picture of it in your tank with actinics only?
I must say that my acans look completely different at night when they aren't full and fleshy, as compared to during the day when they have fully extended, as well as looking different in lighting.

I mean..it does look like the same coral to me...Just from my experience with a coral in that general color scheme with a slightly different pattern. Personally, I didn't think there was any blue coral color in the first pic at all! Thought it was all from the actinics!

I really don't think these are the same acans.

Look at the first pic. It's blue on the outer ring, red on the second ring with mostly red and a little blue in the eye or mouth.

The colors of the second one are white on the outer ring, orange on the second ring, white on the third ring with orange eyes or mouth.

It looks like the acan you have has one more color ring to it, not to mention being a completely different color. Also, acans tend to show off their different colors better when they are stressed and withdrawn, thats why most of the online store pics you see are exactly that.

I vote not the same. Adding actinics will not change the color of a coral this drastically unless actinics were the only lights used, at least none that have ever been in my tank.

Same or not, I like the 2nd pic better. Too many red aussies around, orange is always nicer IMHO. :)

going by shape alone, it looks like the 90 degree notch on the bottom of the first picture is on the right side in the second picture... looks like the same one based on that.

definitly looks like another color band on the inside...

first pic goes blue/white then red pretty much all the way.

second pic goes white-orange-white-orange

wrong color or not, the pattern doesn't match.

I agree. IMO same acan. Goes to show what different lighting does for a tank. FWIW my guess is that he has *heavy* blue on his T5 setup. I'd go so far as to say that first pic was taken with only blue+/actinic lamps turned on.

If you are looking for similar coloration, you will probably have to change your bulb (I know nothing of 70w lamp options), or go to a similar T5 setup.

It's a pretty coral either way.

It's quite clear that theres a lot of blue in the first shot, all blue? I wouldnt necessarily go that far. But what's really killing the comparison is the second shot not only does not have ANY blue light and is all flash, but looks like it was taken at night with the tenticles out like and would explain the extra white band on the inside, while during the day there sucked in. If you look closely in the first shot you can see some barely peeking out and could very well be the same as the outter ring, dunno. Nor do I know anything about those involved but can easily see how this could happen.

Try killing the flash and take a shot with it under all of your lights in your tank?

same one... just rotated and inflated. Coloring diff is lighting.... Unfortunately you should ask for a flash or full lighting shot anytime you see blue skin like that... or blue eggcrate.

if you can, supplement your MH bulb with two giesemann actinic+ bulbs. does are the very blue ones. don't get the pure actinic, does are purple. its the same coral for sure.

yea that is definately the same acan. perhaps just rotated. and looks to me like the first acan is shot under very BLUE lights. it could also be photoshopped.

and yours has its feeders out.

but the texture of the flesh on both acans is the same. and so are the outer white markings.

I think you are seeing the same coral in both pics. Try getting it to close up and take a actinics only pic and see what you come up with.

FWIW and IMHO, that inner ring of grey (blue under the actinics) could be present in the first pic, its just not opened as much there and you would likely only see it completely when the tentacles are out. If you look you can see a little bit of blue in the center of a couple of the polyps in the 1st pic.

A lot of vendors out there photograph their acans when they are stressed out (read: fresh out of the box from importation) thus not expanded. They actually look very different when settled in as a result. Because the tissue is withdrawn the colors are more intense and you also see the outer rings of color between the coralites (often blue or purple in the Aussie lords). When the coral expands in your tank, these outer rings disappear and the ring of color around the tentacles gets exposed (usually whitish-bluish color).

I am not saying its wrong to do so, its just not going to show you exactly what the coral is going to look like in your tank.
