Is this an Acan Maxima?

I got this from a local reefer, I believe it to be the real deal, but wanted others opinions as well. It completely covers a frag plug that is 1.5", and it a single head. When feeding, the feeders look identicle to that of my Acan lords.

Thoughts???

This has been in my local club for quite a few years and it has never turned into a lobo. It has always produced new polyps, it has just taken its sweet time in doing so

can anyone give specifics as to why they don't believe iy to be a maxima??

I realize they are only found off the waters of Oman, but just because they do not allow exportation doesn't mean (at least 100%) that exportation hasn't happened

I guess I am looking for things more along the lines of size, polyp structure, etc...

Lobo..............Lobo's produce new polyps. Maxima's are found deep just like Deep water lobo's. I have several that look like yours some with a smooth texture others bumpy.

If there is any skeleton showing that is the only way to know for sure. As strict as the laws are in Oman I doubt to much is being smuggled but the ocean is a BIG place so you really never know.

I doubt it as acan maximas are only found in one place. Coral is not imported from that area.
They have them for sale at LA Divers Den. At least that is what they are calling them.

Maximas will bud and grow as colonies. They commonly get mistaken for small scolys or lobos. My rule is show me more than one polyp and I'll believe it's a maxima BUT your piece if very nice. Nothing wrong with that piece!

myzislow - that is definately different than what I have. I have seen those in a couple tanks here, not the same.

When your little coral grows up, it's going to look very similar to my coral, and da6d2003's coral. I don't know how you can't see the similarities.

So, if i were to cut the smaller, perfectly round polyp off of my piece, then I have an Acan maxima?
