is this bleaching or something else

I have had this coral for about 2 weeks when I got a new metal halide fixture and everything was fine. I did not like the bulb that came with the fixture so I put in a 150w radium 20k. After about to days with the new bulb my zoos will not open up and it looks like to me the corals are bleaching. When I changed the bulb I am not sure if I installed the little glass piece that goes around the bulb to protect from uv (I guess thats whats it for) correctly, it covers the bottom of the bulb but not the top of it and am not sure if it is suppose to cover the top as well some how since the light will bounce off the reflector. But anyways here is a pic of what is happening, only the side where the light hits is turning white.

hard to tell for sure from that pic but it appears that it isnt bleaching, its necrosis

when it just bleaches you will still have flesh and polyps where it is apparently white

If it doesnt stop, you need to cut off the pieces that have full flesh and remount, in an effort to save what you can. cut well into the healthy tissue and seal all oepn wounds with a thin layer of glue....hope for the best. If it isnt happening at a super fast rate you can usually save some of it

many times who knows. other times it can be obvious due to shipping stress, poor acclimation/dip procedures, unstable or poor water quality, or any other factor you can imagine

It happens, and I dont care who you are, if you have a ton of different corals, soemtimes, some of them are going to want to die entirely or in part, and you dont always get to know why

I just read you post a little better.......if you ran a DE bulb without a shield then in this case, you DO get to know the why. The shield MUST be in place running DE's

I ran it with the shield but not sure if it is installed right, I only see one way to install it. It a biocube hqi fixture and the shield just snaps in but does not cover the top of the bulb, not sure if it is suppose to.

You might have light shocked it too when switching to a MH--whenever altering light it's prudent to dial the lighting schedule back and shade it a little IMO.

Unfortunately I can't tell from your description if the shield is in correctly. Maybe a picture?
