Is this camera ok?

I would like to start taking pics of my tank - however I'm a total newb here. I'm trying to save hundreds, and was wondering if this camera would be ok...

It's a Canon sx30is and the owner says it's like new and will sell for $275

I want it for full tank shots and up close coral pics...even for those sps polyp pics I see here, if possible.

The owner sent me pics the phone took at the zoo which look amazing - but of course who know how legit and photo-shop. He also informed me dslr's come at a price comparitively and I would have to spend even more on a proper lens.

Thanks for your help!

So if I go with a dslr instead, will I need to buy a macro lens. I've read some on this but I'm still confused.

I guess all the Pro's are out taking shots... I have read a lot on this camera and apparently it has great zoom, but I'm not sure if it's still suitable for aquarium close ups???

A DSLR would be a better choice. I was going to get the sx30is but I tried it out and it was just like any other point and shoot but with a long zoom. Look around for a used Canon Rebel XS or XT to start off with.

For macro I have only used extension tubes, because they are cheap and work wonderfully. No need for expensive macro lenses!

Thanks, I'm looking...but it seems hard to get a deal on a nice one. I'll have to read more to figure out extension tubes and where to find them.

I ended up buying a Canon T3 12.2 mp with a 18X55mm lens...so I'll look into extension tubes for that close up shot. So far I'm loving it.
