Ok i have had my purple tang for about a year and i was wondering if you guys think this is a infection of sometype. he has had this scaring around both his eyes since i got him. He was quarintined for a month before introduction and treated with numerous meds in quarintine
It hasnt grown or changed in shape and he doent scratch.
no other fish has this

That's not normal or healthy looking, Thinking they call It Hole in Head Or lateral line disease If I am correct and In no way saying I am, Just a guess! But definetly not healthy. Do you feed Nori on a regular basis? If not you may want to start. Maybe some one else will chime In that has more knowledge of disease.

ok he has no other symptoms other than the apperance and he has doubled in size since i got him and is really fat. I feed nori once a week
Thats why im asking. Ima do research. If hole in the head disease is cured will it still leave lasting scars? like i said i had a really exstensive medicated quarintine for a month. the scaring hasnt changed or grown bigger. I got him really cheap cause the lfs said he was sick.
so i spent time an effort nursing him back.

The tang likely had lateral line erosion the pic is too blurry, I would treat him and make sure he is eating well... I would use Metro. to treat him...

I think doing a search on " Head and Lateral Line Erosion (HLLE) " disease is a good idea. Read about it, see what you think. Can only guess by looking. It suggests that the specific nutritional needs of the fish are not being met. With that, good luck, try new feeding strategies aimed at helping your beautiful purple tang.

yeah i did some reseach and i agree poolkeeper they say its a nutrient deficency and not a medicated related issue. i will increase feeding even though my bryopsis will love it as well. It was actueally a really good picture when i took it but i had to shrink it so much to fit the confines of this site it is blurry now

It does look like HLLE which has to do more with water quality and nutrition. Best to get your water checked and feed high quality frozen food like the ones Angela made us!!!! I liked it A LOT better then Emerald Entree or anything from the LFS. I'm very disappointed with some of the brands of food after I've been using them for so many years and they started changing all the ingredients. Just remember, tangs NEEDS veggie food, NOT too much meaty foods!!!! Get you some seaweed from asian market. Frozen Emerald Entree, about the only veggie tray out there....During my fight with bryopsis, I feed a lot less then I usually do. Normal feeding I feed nori in the morning and frozen food at night. Down to just nori or frozen food once every other day or so.

i picked up a pack of green roasted nori from the asian marked and brown nori as well. It only cost 4 bucks and i had to cut it in half. Alot better than the ones sold at LFS. I rolled it up like a joint and put it on a vegies clip.
I have only been feeding him mostly Marine 1
It was gone in about an hour. my tang and foxface went crazy.
i guees you can be fat and still suffer from nutrient deficency. I do a 10% water change religously every week. I need to start back going to the meeting to benefit from Angela's food and stuff.
Hey they had alot of different types of algae at the market anyone ever try the other types?
I also read that it could be related to vitamin c deficency. Are there any over the counter cheaper alternatives to this?

You can get the frozen food from LFS, it should supplement what your missing. It's easier that way then to mess with it. I personally don't even use an algae clip anymore. I've taught all my fish to eat from the surface and they all go to town on algae sheets when it hits the surface. It took them awhile to learn, but they got it down pretty quick. I've got a Naso, Sailfin, Regal, and Yellow Tangs. Plus a Foxface that can't stop eating off my hand and I'm afraid of him!!!! I'm afraid I'll get stabbed one day since he gets attacked by the blenny when they both are feeding together. He would flop around when the blenny attacks, that's when I risk of getting injured so I mainly keep my fingers out during feeding time.

FYI If your Foxface isn't trying to intentionally stab you, you shouldn't be worried. Besides it's no biggie to cut it open and run it under hot water.

He doesn't try to stab me intentionally, but he would raise his fins when he's attacked by the blenny and he would go berserk right underneath where I'm feeding so it's really not worth the risk. I am not gonna try to cut my fingers open cause that wouldn't be fun since I just got done fighting some infections that was caused by something stabbing into me in the first place.... It's just better to be safe then sorry to keep my hands out during feeding time...

I would not suggest cutting into the sting or bite of any non-lethal creature unless it needed to be lanced. And hot water works for lionfish by neutralizing the affect of the proteins in the venom, but will do nothing for a foxface sting but make your hand hot. (trust me i've tried it with both on more than one occasion) A foxface IMO is about like a bee sting and you will experience some stiffness for the rest of the day. If you get hit the only thing you have to worry about is a possible allergic reaction, if that's the case you'll experience dizziness and blurred vision and should seek medical attention immediatly

That's why I stay away from the stingers! I got a second Foxface since then, a different coloration this time. I like them just not the stingers....lol
