I just can't get the lighting right, so I'm trying this. It's just a 55w light in my celling in my basement. What do you guys think?

Just use a clamp on light and a 15w incandescent bulb for $2. For the first few days tint the water pretty heavily - just make sure you have enough aeration if you are tinting with RG complete

i use a led light in the ceiling works out to be 4 ft above larva tanks
I put the tanks underneath window on the west side that way I get the afternoon light.

your larva will tell you how dense to tint green.
I watch the larva if there clinging to sides of tank I add more algae.i add algae dropwise till there all off the glass
what you have there is what I use.you can go LED or a lower wattage to consume less energy.
the larva only need light to eat

Is that a "flood" style light or a "spot" style light? It looks like a flood light from the picture. You could try getting a spot light instead to concentrate the light down onto the tanks.
