I use Furan-2 with pretty good success. However, I've read some good things about both Kanaplex and Maracyn Plus recently, and plan on giving both a try in the near future. Honestly, it's whatever you can find... just make sure it's a broad spectrum antibiotic that covers both gram positive & negative infections.
Honestly, I don't think he's going to make it. So what do you really have to lose?
If you do the f/w dip, do it for 5 mins max. Alternatively, you can give him a formalin bath for 30-45 mins. Pickup some "Quick Cure" from Walmart pet section on the way home from work - it has formalin in it. Both the f/w & formalin bath will only help if this is Velvet. But I think the chances are pretty good that is what you are dealing with here. When a fish has Velvet, the dots have a gold color to them. But you have to see the fish in the right light, at the right angle, to really notice it. Otherwise, the dots just look white (like Ich).
Man that looks like velvet. My personifer just went thru that. I would give a fw bath and get him in cuppramine ASAP . you need to act fast or he will be gone very soon .
is there a good post on f/w dip procedure? at work so dont have much time to search and will do this immediately when I get home. do i just use straight RO/DI? or do I need to add some Alk?
Is the quick cure option just mixed with saltwater and less hard on the fish?
E.g. which is most likely to help this fish btw f/w or quick cure? I am continuing the TTM in the mean time.
For the f/w dip, use RODI in a clear glass bowl; match temp & pH of the tank the fish is coming out of. To raise the pH, just squirt a little tank water in the bowl. Leave the fish in the f/w dip for 5 mins max. Don't be surprised if the tang "plays dead" - they do that sometimes during a f/w dip. As long as the fish is still breathing, he is fine.
For the formalin dip/Quick Cure, use s/w from your tank. Follow the dosing instructions on the packaging. If you have a 5 or 10 gal tank laying around that would probably be best, as the fish will need to stay in there for 30-45 mins. Or even 60 mins if he looks like he can handle it (most fish start looking bad after 45 mins though). But you can always just use the same bowl you used for the f/w dip in a pinch. Aerate the tank/bowl heavily, as formalin will quickly deplete the water of O2.
