Is this normal ?

I've always used a lens that has an adjustable focal length (18-55; 70-200; etc.)
I recently bought a Canon 85mm lens, but have a question.

When I turn the focus ring, on my other lenses, it only turns so far before stopping. I can only turn it so much to the left or so much to the right before it won't go any further. With the new lens, while I can get objects in focus, the focus ring will keep turning indefinitely in both directions. Is this normal for this lens or is there a problem ? It takes great pics, and focuses fine, just the focus ring doesn't stop at any particular point. Hope that makes sense.

Im not 100% sure. My f1.2 does the same although that lens is designed for manual focus correction given how shallow the DoF is when wide open.

Dont quote me, but basically its designed so that when shooting a bride and you want just her eye in focus you can manually adjust critical focus if needed. The f1.8 might be similar in design.

If it works jim dandy and there are no optical flaws I worry sweat it much. The 85 f1.8 is a great lens, one of those sleeper lenses that if you can get used you get at a great price relative to what you pay for others.

That's my recollection too but I've only shot with the lens once, at a Canon event, and honestly didn't notice.

Call Canon if you're not sure. They don't bite. :)

Not like the Nikkon guys... they bite hard... (Jesse)

Nope, I nibble. Though I do draw blood.

Nikon has a few lenses that work like that. In Nikon it's for the reasons JBen posted. I don't know why Canon did it.

:D
