Is this pushing it?

I was wondering if this was pushing it a bit? I have a brand new 60g tank that i want to turn into a FOWLR. I was wondering if you guys think that placing a Valentin Puffer will be too much? In other words will that fish end up getting too big for that 60g tank? I read in liveaquaria that they only require a 50g tank. Thanks.

from what I'm told, the fish will only grow as big as it's environment. But, every LFS has their own theory on fish growth. I have a 7 inch volitan lion fish in my 55gal along with an 8 inch burr puffer and my snowflake moray is a foot long possibly longer and some stores tell me I over loaded my tank and some tell me I'm fine so I guess it's up to yourself to do the figuring out.

IMO, the ones that say you are fine are just trying to make a buck. Fish do NOT grow to the size of their environment and stay healthy. They are either stunder severly or poison themselves with their own waste and die a premature death. As for the puffer in the first post, I think you will be fine since these puffers stay small (if it's the one I'm thinking of, a toby). To the second poster, I hope all is well in your tank, but I urge you to either upgrade or trade the fish in for something more appropriate.

I would highly recomend the v puffer or any of the dwarf (toby) puffers for a tank of your size. they are great fish they are active but don't grow to big and are a blast to watch .

Yup, that is because fish die prematurely once they get too big in small tanks. Volitians need large tanks, I'd suggest an upgrade or maybe try exchanging it in for a drawf.

As everyone else, tobies will be fine in a 60g.

A Valentini should be fine in a 60 gal
Max size is around 4"

What is your tank setup? #'s of LR? Fish stocking? and filtration?

In a 60 gallon u would be providing more than accurate space for this fish it is one of the smaller species

That is the puffer I was talking about. It seems to have different information on the requirement section. Dr. Fosters were saying that they require at least 50g and marinedepot says at least 20g, that a major difference. I should know better than that though, I usually dont follow fish stores advise. I come to the forums, lol.

Well what I have right now is really just the tank. I am buying things little by little because I have a 20g reef tank that is being upgraded into a 40g reef. So it's somewhat expensive, as you all know by now.

The plans for the FOWLR tank will be like this. 60g tank, 30g sump with ASM Skimmer. I will also have a closed loop on it, not that it really benefits a FOWLR tank but I will still have it just incase I get the "upgrade the 60g to a reef" bug. What do you recomend for filtration on this tank? Do you think the sump and skimmer be enough?

pounds of LR, will be any where from 80 to 100 pounds.

Let me ask another question before I forget. If I do get a Valentini puffer, what other fish can I keep in there? Can I place like one more fish or will I be ok to place a couple of more fish in there. Maybe: 1) Valentini Puffer 1) Damsel and 2) Clowns? Would that be ok?

i have a valentini puffer in my 30 gal and he does great

What other fish do you have in there?

For filtration combined total around 90 gals a ASM G2 skimmer would be ideal unless you have plans of upgrading in the future then maybe a G3

Puffers are sensitive to Ich so I use a Turbo twist UV light.

I'm not fond of Damsels. A marron gold strip clown would be a nice addition. Possible a dwarf angel or 2. Bi-color or flame angel once tank is established. Certain Wrasse are a great character to add.

Good luck with your tank

So a Clown will be ok in a 60g tank with a Puffer? For some reason when they mention Puffers being aggressive they seem to be like real extra aggressive. They look dangerous, haha.

Not a bad idea with the UV light though. I actually had never thought about that. Then again I never knew that Puffers would be ich magnets. I thought that was just the blue tangs. Good to know though.
