Is this really necessary?

I have two Hydor Koralia 3 power heads. They have coralline algae and some green hair algae; not too much of the hair algae.

Is it really necessary to clean these heads to prolong life?

If it is on the shell and not covering any of the holes then leave it but if it is covering some of the holes and is on the impeller or places close to it then it's time for a clean

I had been cleaning my koralia w/ viniger and a toothbrush every other month, and now its making a loud noise that I can't seem to fix. But its in my nano, and I'm going to the new echotech marine heads anyway.

My thoughts on this is if it isn't broke, don't fix it...sometimes. The power heads seem to be operating fine w/ no blockage.

And, they've been in operation now for 8-9 months without cleaning. I've seen some at my LFS that look like they've been in the tank for years and still operating.
