Yeah, thats bad. Frag what you can and cross your fingers. Check your parameters. A water change wiuld not be a bad idea. If that happened overnight, prognosis no bueno. GL!
I just did my tests....I usually do them the day after a water change anyway, in order to let the water mix completely.
pH= 7.8~8.0 (normal for me)
KH= 11 degrees hardness or 110 on the Nutrafin scale
Ca= 380~400 (a little low for me)
Phos= 0~.25 on the API kit. Closer to 0, barely registered. I really need a Hanna for this.
Nitrate= 0
Temp= 77
My Alk was low last month ago, but it was an accidental drop. It's been fairly steady between 10 and 11 for a while.
OTOH, it IS true that my Birdsnests never really recovered from the Alk drop last month. That's why I was curious if this might be some kind of bacterial infection.
First I would pull the coral out and put it in a white container with tank water. A clear one with a white background or paper under it would also work. Look at it very close up and with a magnifying glass if possible. Make sure you don't have any red bugs or other pests. You can gently blast the coral with a turkey baster. If there isn't then it is most likely rtn. I would frag the tips, but not to close to the white area. Dip them in iodine and glue to plugs.
