Is the guy in my new rock a mantis? This is the first live rock I've ever gotten :([

I can see a couple anemones, a hermit crab or snail, and a brittle star. There might be some sort of critter there with the starfish, but the pic doesnt show that one very well.

The guy on the right with the big eyes....

I'll work on getting him to come out...I dropped some food in earlier and he came running to the edge!

I'll work on the pic!

try getting a tube to feed with... maybe have someone help ya get the shot. Try to lure it out of the hole.

If it is a mantis, be kind!

Yep, I'd say that is a mantis. Very cool little guys!! I have seen a few mantis tanks that are pretty nice....although you may not have a mantis tank.....:)

How big is your tank btw?

55 gallon....I'm changing from a tank with 5 fish and some fake rocks and tattered plastic stuff (really awful) and slowly making it into a semi-reef tank.

Very cool!! Good way to get hands-on too! Keep us posted on how it goes. I was going to set up a tank in my room, only to find out I would have to tear it down for the summer.

Sweet! Looks like a smasher too. If it is a smasher, just keep some snails around or keep feedng w/ a tube. They make an interesting addition the the reef.

Don't I have to take him out? I haven't browsed these mantis forums yet...my first live rock and critters and I have HIM.

If you tell me it is semi-safe to keep him then I will...I think he's AWESOME! But I thought I really needed to get rid of him. OR...I could get him out of this tank if he stays in this hole ( do they stay in their own territory usually?) and then I could transfer him to one of the 10-gallons when they get set up. That way if he breaks the tank...it won't be disasterous.

Semi safe. They have personalities all their own so it is a little dependant of the individual, and a little dependant on the species. I had peppermint shrimp in with my N.wennera for the longest time and i don't think he was the cause of their demise (going to add more this weekend as the Aptasia anemonys are back). Currently there are three yellow tail chromis and a saphire Damsel along with some big turbo snails, and a Hitchhiker Gorilla crab I noticed yesterday (his days are numbered though).
You will need to get a good shot of him to define what species it is. Important things to include are the smasher arms, and the tail.
As to it busting out of your 55, its not going to happen. A big mantis in a glass 10 maybe, but a 55 is highly unlikely.

I have the prettiest deco crab...will he be safe?

lots of brittles, a semi large serpent, and some other crabs.

He can have all the snails he wants because I can get as many as I need for free close by.

I'll work on these pictures. Thanks.

Ladyfsu, it might be better if you can get it into a sep. aquarium. I keep mine in my main reef w/ a 6line wrasse, a maroon clown, skunk shrimp and a couple crabs (mithrax and pom pom). I do feed the mantis w/ a tube. Yes there are some cases of broken tanks caused by larger mantis shrimps.
I am happy to see you want to keep the mantis though. Have you read about the adventures of Tim?

ladyfsu, I'm glad to hear you are making the jump. Sounds like you're having a great time already, with lots more enjoyment to come. Good luck. Mike

The deco-crab is a meal waiting to happen...

The best case would be to setup a seperate little tank where you can really enjoy the little mantis rather than cursing him every time you find a broken crab or shrimp skeleton. Alternatively, remove his rock from the tank into a bucket of tank water and lurel him out. Then give him to someone else actually looking for a mantis. ;)

Love the rock he's in. The tulip/flower anemones are a nice find also.

Glove,

Keep an eye on that 6-line. I still believe the 6-line that roomed with Tim for a bit was the fish that made him into a pirate (ate one of his eyes).

I managed to keep peppermint shrimp (3 of them) with Tim also... for about 6 months, then he went on a terror and eliminated them. As Tim's gotten larger and more 'confident' I add the occassional mithrax in for 'company.' They used to last much longer than they do currently. ;)

The mantis is a great creature to keep in a species tank, but if one is trying to keep decorative crabs and shrimp it will probably lead to frustration down the line.

Additionally, in the 55 described in this thread-starters situation the mantis would rarely be seen unless it was a really out-going mantis. /shrug

sorry to hijack the thread ladyfsu-
DM, yea I have been noticing the 6line is getting a bit pushy. I got the fish to cure flatworms (the freshwater dip took care of the problem though)
I am currently working on the frag / prop tank setup so I can do yet another transfer. I plan on placing the mantis his own kingdom. I am going to try a planted dsb w/ rubble. I just need to work out the plumbing kinks on the prop tank and wait for my lighting to arrive before I can do the transfer.

Yes I read the adventures of Tim. That's what got me started. :)

I think I'm going to put him in a 30 gallon at school. I have separated my deco at the moment because he's the prettiest deco I've ever seen and I don't want him to get hurt.

One of the tanks I'm setting up at school will have live rock in it, but will eventually have small semi-aggressive local fish in it. A small mangrove snapper, a small grunt, small sheepshead and snook, and if I get lucky a very small grouper (yes I have an educator's collector's permit for this).

Do you think he would be OK in that tank? Or maybe I shouldn't put him in there because those big fish will eat or scare him?

I don't mind you hijacking this thread. I'm learning a lot. I have a rainbow wrasse at home.
