Here are 2 of the same zoas 1 at ISO 1600 1 at ISO 100. Both pics are heavily cropped. Before cropping viewing at 13.7% they looked pretty equal.

A good example of how higher iso can introduce noise.

FYI, in my experience, full frame sensors introduce much less noise at higher isos. From the amount of noise introduced, I'm guessing your camera has a crop sensor.

Here's a thread where I explore higher isos using my full frame 6D: Don King Chia Shrek

Post #5 I feel has the most relevant info.

Yes crop sensor Nikon D3200. I am amazed at the iso abilities of the ff cameras. I only have a 60mm macro lens so I end up cropping most of my coral pics significantly which is when the higher iso noise really shows up. Someday maybe I will get a ff sensor camera, but for now low iso will have to suffice.

You can look into off camera flashes or move the items closer to the front glass if possible. Are you using a tripod? If so, it takes away the worry of having a slow shutter.

Yes I use a tripod and the self timer on my camera to eliminate shake. I can get pretty decent pics of corals if I turn all the pumps off and use higher aperture combined with slow shutter speeds. The fish are another story though as I am sure you know. I have been experimenting to try and get max depth of field on my coral pics.
