It finally happened to me.

I never thought it could, but it did!

My RODI tube fell out of my sump on to the floor. It laid there for 8 hrs trying to raise the water level. When I got home, I’m guessing, about 8 gallons of water was on the floor.

I ripped the carpet and padding up stuck a few fans on it, and now my room sounds like a whirlwind with all the blowing that is going on.

I’ve decided to buy a timer for the autotopoff pump that will allow it to run for 5 minutes every hour. That way, it will reduce the on/off activity of the pump and should prevent such a massive water spill.

Luckily, this didn’t happen while I was away for 10 days in Costa Rica last week. There is a Brightside ….. there always is to every negative situation ….. I didn’t burn the building down and all my fish and corals are alive.

I’m sure a few of you out there have experienced similar issues. What types of security devices have you setup?

I have a little tub that empties only a set amount of RO water into the system.

two things:
1) If it does leak or something, it's not a complete flood, only a gallon or so (2 days worth for me)

2) if it does empty into the tank, it's won't drop the salinity too much.

Downside is that I have to fill it every day - no real biggie, but sometimes I get lazy.

I have a set up like greg with a 5 gallon container, but I also have the pump on a timer for my 240G

I use the JBJ auto-topoff, which has a built-in variable time limiter. I also have my topoff line attached fairly securely to my sump : )

have a dedicated water storage bin, that will only pump x amount of water in your system if your pump fails or gets stuck on.

Fill the reserviuor up manually.

i use the aquatronica controller with 2 float switches.. (if one fails there is a back up) and if for some god forsaken reason both fail the ato is set to a timer turn it off after 1 hour.

i feel pretty safe with that!

well just thought I also mention the Tunze osmilator. That's what I use and its has two switches one is an optical and the other is a float switch. The good thing about it is that the pump is only a 12v source, the optical timer is very accurate and it as a 10min max timer so that it only runs for 10m. It will also tell me if there is to much water or the water level it low and need to refill the top of container. I think this was the best thing I bought for my tank other then the skimmer.
