It was inevitable....

Well, after doing some research, I've answered my own question. it appears that removing the top rim on tanks under 30 gallons or so is perfectly safe to do. It's the larger tanks - above about 50 gallons - that have had occassional problems with the glass bowing after removing the top rims.

I feel better now. You have a great looking set up, Rockryno, and I'm glad your tank is structurally sound.

thanks guys! Ive had a derimmed 20L before and never had a problem. I wouldn't do it with a 10g, or anything bigger than the 20g, unless it was manufactured rimless. Coincidentally, I think I may put the rim back on because the AI light mount looks kinda weird just sitting on the glass, AND I have to run the wires to the light along the top edge of the glass too the back. Would look much better with a rim...ugh.

I might be worried that the top rim was adding structural support and that the corners might separate.

Edit. Disregard this post I posted after reading the first page. Seems elwaine had the same concerns which were addressed.

Great start and amazing cat. :D

Many people derim 20 longs with success, it's generally not an issue because of the tank dimensions. It's commonly done over in the FW planted tank world.

corals have begun!

Overflow

Overflow

Great tank! I have a question about your overflow. Why have it,if you have a over the top filter? Or do you have a sump? Tank and corals excluded how much for you setup? Thanks and keep it up!

The purpose behind the overflow was to create surface skimming abilities with the HOB filter. Without surface skimming, youll notice a film of crap on the surface of the water. HOB only houses chaeto and a fiber filter and creates flow. The overflow also allows me to hide the heater and ATO sensors. And finally, only the water level in the overflow drops with evaporation, not the entire tank. Its the cheapest, best thing to do to compliment a HOB.

Thanks!

Tunze 3155 iinstalled! Man, talk about tight. I had to take the sensor mount plate off the magnet and zip tie it to the filter intake tube. I have NO room left in the overflow.

Its definitely filling when the level gets low, but im finding it fills past the optical sensor to the point the float sensor has to shut the water off, and sounds an annoying alarm. Its not bad cuz its only about a 1/2" difference which is a tiny amount of water in that overflow, but still not functioning properly.

gracias!
