It's a mystery

So I started off with 5 hermits.. witnessed 2 die (1 got his leg stuck and the other was being eaten by another). Added 7 more. The mystery is.. I now have 12 live hermit crabs.. no empty shells. Where did these 2 extra come from? Could the crabs have been hiding in rock waiting for a shell? I'm so confused.

The two which you thought were dead may have been moulting and you were seeing the remains from the moult, it might explain why you can still count 12 in total. ...

yep... hermits "molt" (shed their outer skin) and may will confuse that with a death as its amazing how much of an entire "skin" comes off intact.. It looks like a complete body..

+1 on the molting. First time it happened to my blue leg I thought he got killed too.
