Its a Sad Day...

Just got home from a wonderful 12 day vacation in Texas to find almost everything in my reef is gone. Seems there was a major storm here last week and my reef sitter didnt make it over to check on the tank. It had sit idle for more than 10 hours and nearly everythnig is gone. Seems when the power came back on it has triped a few of the breakers in my breaker box..I have no idea how that could have happened but thats the story I got..

All thats left are a few Zoa's and 1 of 4 Open Brains..I dont even want to look at the tank as it sickens me...

So Im done sniveling to you all I just need to get it off my chest..So the rebuilding starts I guess

Rich;

Sorry to hear about the tank crash.

If you need any corals to get started again.. let me know. I'll hook you up.

sanjay.

Sanjay....your the man...thanks for the kind words. Ive always read about these things happening but thought I had it covered in case it ever did.

Ill let you know when and if I need somthing.

Thanks again!

That is horrible! I am always afraid whenever I go away because the people that I have looking after my tank when I am gone have limited knowledge. I cringe every time i take the first look. I know that homeowners insurance covers electronics and stuff I wonder if they cover tanks? You may want to look into that. I a will be checking into my policy as well.

Sorry to hear it. We actually had no power at our house for 26 hours last week. We were the only street in the neighborhood without power for that long. Luckily I'm only keeping live rock and a few corals in a big tub right now so no major loss here. But I am now seriously considering a home standby generator before I set the new system up.

Every time I hear stories like this it just strengthens my resolve to do it. But even WITH a generator, your tank sitter should have checked in.

One thing though..be careful what you toss..there may still be enough life in some types of corals to recover. I had it happen to me in Jersey when I thought everything was dead, but once the water cleaned up a few remnants came back.

Good luck.

Thanks all...Ive been able to get things up and running. The tank looks ok but its really naked in there withiut any of my prize peices. So Im at a point of dession. Where to go from here. I would really like to do a compleat overhaul of the rock work but am unsure as where to start. I really dont want to lose anymore life than I already have but a makeover would be nice. The biggest problem I have at the moment is MONEY. (dont we all). What Id really like to do is to pull some of the rock out, drill them and make some small pillers. like I said Im concerned about dieoff while I do this...

Suggestions anyone?

I have a ton of green polyped leathers, GSP and I could snip a piece of a toadstool if you are interested in softies.

Other than that I'm in the same boat as you, finally starting over after the same type of crash last year, sad part is I go on vacation again this month..... 1st since the crash.

If it crashes again I will most likely be done for good :(

I can ship the softies if you are interested.... 100% free.

Best of luck rebuilding,

Greg

I am very sorry to hear about your losses as well. I have three types of sinularias, a couple types of leathers, a few stray mushrooms, and one millipora frag laying around. I travel out to state college every once in a while so if you are interested in any of that let me know and I will be more than happy to bring something for you to help you restock.

Shimmy, when my wife and I got our renters insurance she asked about insuring the tank. Travelors at least, will not cover any losses in an aquarium.

Well Im a little overwhelmed and by the genorsity Ive received from you all. My Intentions were only to vent and pass on my experence of a crash. Never did I expect such a boost in moral over this. You all are awsome...Thank you so much.

Sanjy...Ill be in touch in the next few days

GL...Id be happy to accept any thing your willing to send..YGPM

insanefishguy....Let me know when you heading this way.

Again...You all are Great and Thanks Again for the support!

I think if your going to redo your rockwork, you may as well do it now. I don't think you would experience any more die off.

Well folks..thats exactly what Ive spent the better half of today doing..Pulling rocks, drilling holes and moving things around. Added some rock from the fuge and removed some from the desplay. Looking pretty good so far and Ive been able to make some shelvs and such to accomade new frags as I need. Im going to let the changover settle in my head for a day or so and make any changes as needed. So far Im happy with the makeover. A little bare in there but you all know nothing comes fast with a reef except its death..

Sceadu, Sorry to hear about your loss man... PM me with your info I always come up for the games I would be glad to hook you up with a few frags in a few months when I head down.

Yeah I figured most insurance companies probably would not cover it but it is a thought. I

Sceadu, sorry for your loss. I feel your pain, I was also on vacation during this recent heat wave and lost almost everything in both my 90 and 30 gallon tanks. What a horrable way to end a great vacation.
Think its time to unload the fish and rock that are left in the 90 and maybe rebuild the 30.

Stinpa...Sorry to hear my friend. That was my thoughts at 12:30 when I finally got home but after some sleep and the kind words from the folks here Im glad I didnt. Spend some time rearranging things..make things look diffrent. Thats what Ive been doing and things are looking up. Im not totaly pleased with the look but a few more hours today and Im sure I will.

So take it from me who has just been there...Give it some good thought and have at it..You will be glad you did!:bum:
