Its started.... emperor is eating corals

Oh well..... it appears to have begun......

I put in a few corals last week.... leathers / 'shrooms / star polyps.

First few days were fine..... but for the last couple of days, a few of the leathers are totally closed up...... I caught the emporer last night relly having a go at them......

Seems to be letting the sacrophyton's alone, and the shrooms and star polyps..... but the other leathers.... I think they'll have to go (or be eaten!).

Will try and get pics later.

Matt

Sorry to hear that Matt. That is how it started with my angels too. THey picked on all my beautiful toadstools and devils hand. Then moved onto the Polyps and zoas. They finally ate all my torch, frogspawn, and hammer.

In the end, anything fleshy gets eaten now.

Here's a few pics as promised.....

Note the white pok marks on the coral, where he has started munching down!!!

Just FYI sort of thing..... here's a full tank shot.... characteristically poor quality..... need to read a few of those how to "photography" threads!!!

Its a beutiaful fish. Its a shame he has an appetite for corals tho. Are you going to get rid of him ????

Well I always said when it comes to crunch time, I would make the choice to either go completely reef - and get rid of the angel, and go for coral safe fish only there after..... i.e. no angels or butterflies...... OR else, get rid of the corals that the angel doesn't eat and keep the remaining....... which is teh way I was hoping to go..... but it loks at this stage like he is going to eat everything.....

So far, he has not even looked at the baby sacrophyton toadstools, the mushrooms, or the star polyps...... SO FAR....... but they haven't been in there a month yet.......

So..... now that it is crunch time, I dunno what I am gonna do:
At the moment there is about a 70:30 change I'll keep him (70% chance keeping him).
However, my dealer has a nice majestic in stock at the moment..... which might bridge the gap between wanting a "large" angel, but still wanting some semblence of a "reef"...... this possibility slims the odds down somewhat, more like 60:40..... But still, I am very undecided.

In the interim, I am going to rescue those few corals that are definitely doomed..... into the sump with a bit of lighting they will go.....

But more poor old emperor...... well I have nurtured him now for 10 months or so..... and grown him from a 3" juv (see below) to the way he is now (6"+)....

He is hand tame, extremely outgooing, and I love him to bits.......
Enough to take the final step back to "100% FOWLR"...... still undecided!!!

REgards,

Matt

I'm sort of looking over my shoulder as I type this..... like I'm talking about a relative behinds their back........ such is the guilt I feel for even contemplating getting rid of him!!! LOL :D LOL !!! Shame on me!!!

I kind of need the Mrs. input too on this though...... it is "our" tank.... sort of anyway..... as in its about 75% mine and 25% hers..... although she refers to the emporer as "your fish" and she refers to the corals as "my corals"..... as in "your fish is eating my corals"..... LOL......

I might just go out and get a sohal tang and a passer angel...... they are her two favourite fish of all time...... that would passify her for a while.... and what the emporer fails to eat.... the passer definitely will...... LOL...... if only things were that simple!

cheers,

Matt

the passer will eat your corals also, imo it is difficult to mix alot of fish and corals.most people have one or the other

Yes..... I know...... probalby the worst angel of all.... if reports are to be believed. The point was (half jokingly) that the corals are my wife's..... and the fish are mine..... BUT the passer angel is my wife's second favourite fish (after sohal tang)..... sooooooo if I got her a passer angel, it would be "her" fish then "her" fish would eat "her" corals, thus absolving "my" fish of the blame......

Assuming "my" 6 inch fish doesn't proceed to duly murder her 2-3 inch fish that is.... LOL.....

Matt - IMHO I would salvage what corals you have and return them to the LFS for credit and go get the Majestic AND the Passar. You definitely have the room.

Make sure that the Passar is much smaller than the emperor. I would say 3-4 inches would be great for the "King" angel.

Hey Chris - the thought had crossed my mind actually ;) ...... still considering the queen..... my buddy will be getting in 12 more soon.....

My dealer also has a pair of blue chin triggers in stock...... he's had them a while now, so they are well adjusted...... might make a nice addition.

Oh man! The pair of Blue throat triggers would be AWESOME! I love my triggers and want a female companion for my crosshatch.

If I were you, I would pull the trigger and get the triggers :)

yeah..... I was going to get a pair of clarkii clowns...... but the trigger..... eemmmmm! yum yum ;)

I'd like a pair of cross hatch triggers too..... but a pair would cost well over $1,000 US.... easily tipping $1,500 I would think...... here in Ireland anyway..... plus shipping!!!

HAHAH!!! YES!! Way to go Matt! Welcome back to the darkside my friend.

FOWLR is the only way to go. Now it is time to start getting your other angels in there.
